Upon arrival, meet with the guide and head to the hotel for check-in and freshen up. Spend a half-day exploring Yangon and its highlights from Sule Pagoda, an important Yangon landmark centrally at the bustling area. Now we have the stroll to the exotic streets of Yangon downtown with the British Colonial building as Emmanuel Church, Inland Water Buildings. The day ends by your shopping time at the Bogyoke Market (formerly Scott’s market), one of the biggest markets in Yangon (Please be advised that the market is closed on Monday & holiday).

DAY 2: YANGON – FLY TO MANDALAY – SAGAING – AMARAPURA (B/-/-)

Leave Yangon for Mandalay where you will take a short flight to Mandalay, a city founded in 1857 as the capital by King Mindon. The Mandalay Palace boasts finely built regal walls and a beautiful moat surrounding her fortress. Mandalay is the principle center for Buddhism studies in Myanmar.

We first drive to Amarapura, the ancient capital of the Konbaung Dynasty for Mahagandayon Monastery. The place is currently home to more than 1000 monks. Every day at mid-morning, monks and novices line up silently to receive their daily offering of alms and food from faithful Buddhists.

Continue to Sagaing Hill. In 1930, the writer Maurice Collis stood on the eastern bank of the Ayeyarwady and gazed across at Sagaing prior to taking up his post as its Deputy Commissioner. He wrote, “Behind the town with its mat and wooden houses was a cluster of yellow hills on top of each a golden pagoda with monasteries in profusion. There bathed in sunshine, secret and still, was Buddhist Burma.” Today there are said to be no fewer than 554 monasteries, home to some 6,000 monks and nuns.

End of the day, walk over Ubein Wooden Bridge, the longest teakwood of its type & enjoy great sunset view here.

The 45 minute boat trip to Mingun is a very pleasant way to see the life along the Ayeyarwady River.

Return to city for more visits to key places of interest, including Mandalay Palace, Shwenandaw Monastery – noted for its exquisite wood carvings & Kuthodaw Pagoda – home of the world’s largest book. The city is also a major handicraft center where stone and marble carvers, gold leaf pressing, tapestry workshops, cotton and silk textile weaving, silver smith workshops and bamboo fan factories are on display (visit one of the workshop).
